During the early hours of March 14th my frustration with SPAM in Yahoo! chat rooms reached it's peak. While I have sent numerous complaints in the past to Yahoo! Inc. I typically used either their online abuse form or e-mail. In all cases the responses to my complaints were either the typical form letter or met with complete silence. Looking for another way to get Yahoo's attention I decided to post my complaint to the Yahoo! Messenger Blog, a new "feature" Yahoo! created to inform it's users of all the wonderful things they are working on. What followed was an awe inspiring string of complaints from users that are just as fed up with the current situation as I am. Not only was the response unexpected but it showed just how frustrated the entire Yahoo! chat community must be feeling. Since the time of my original post over 200 comments from other frustrated users have appeard.
After reading only a few of the responses I came to the conclusion that something must be done about this quickly growing epidemic. Since it appears that most if not all complaints concerning this problem go unanswered and since Yahoo! does not seem to realize how serious this problem truly is. I feel that it would be a disservice to the entire Yahoo! community to simply sit back and wait to see if Yahoo! will actually address the problem. From the frustration felt by myself and a large number of users in the Yahoo! chat community I decided that if there was ever a time to take action this is it. A couple of years ago the SPAM problem in Yahoo! chat was simply considered an annoyance rather than a significant problem. As of this writing the problem has grown to epidemic proportions with an estimated 60% to 80% of users in chat not being real people but SPAM bots - programs that jump from room to room automatically posting messages from a predefined script advertising money making schemes and pornography (primaryly webcam sites). It is time for the entire Yahoo! community to stand up and let Yahoo! know that the situation is absolutely unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated. The original comment including responses from other users can still be seen on their blog and can be seen here. Comments (29)

Chet
I always knew you were a smart man. I cannot agree more with you about the bots. Is Yahoo trying to drive away chatters? 60% of chat room users are bots - what an amazing statistic. Are they serving their advertisers and sponsors well? Perhaps letters to the advertisers would be of value too. I would really like some action to on the clone names of actual real chatters - the nasty names with horrible photos which are allowed to be made and used, despite it being contrary to the terms of use!! Any suggestions on what to do Chet please? We use the iggy and report the abuse, but as you rightly put - a standard reply is all we get. I will send a reponse to the Yahoo Blog page too. Thankyou for making a stand here. I support your efforts written by Pattie B, March 26, 2007
I have thought for a long time that Yahoo's intention is to drive away chatters & close chat down. Yahoo chat doesn't work as well as it did 6 years ago. It would seem that Yahoo would rather make money from phone calls etc than to address the probs in chat. I feel chat is an embaressment to Yahoo, they would rather focus on OTHER services. Easy money to be made that way............but tell me this Yahoo.......if we don't have chat, how we gonna use all those services you offer to make new friends to contact.. As fer charging for chat........Yahoo couldn't handle all the complaints

Dear Yahoo Account Services and Chet Simpson,
I have been complaining about the conditions in yahoo chat for over six months and recieve the same answers you do; a simple form letter that has nothing to do with the complaints I listed. The rooms have been down going on 10 weeks now. I had sent at least 6 messages to yahoo. I even went as far as calling Verizon for I am a paid subscriber. Verizon's answer was, Yahoo doesn't listen to us either and we have no dirrect line of communication with them. All problems are resolved via e-mail. (What a Joke) Secondly I have been complaining of porn bots since their inception onto yahoo. Yahoo I just read and the courts decided it is up to parents to watch thier children on line. Well, as a parent I am watching children on line and if this is the kind of garbage Yahoo condones and our High Courts then maybe it's time to shut down the computer. As an adult I am offended by the vulgar nature and language of these bots. Also as a parent I am telling Yahoo and our courts that I dont want to see it in open public rooms. It is teaching the young and advocating to them that this is propper conduct and we all know different. GET IT OFF !!!! Thirdly; Yahoo Terms 'States' the use of obscene names in ID's is breach of the terms of service. Big Deal, great wording for a contract. Now lets get off your duffs and enforce your own rule. Lastly, CREWS and FAMILIES; They breed trouble in the rooms. They invite more booting and more nonsence with the bickering back and forth and the want for some lamers to control Yahoo user rooms and chat. Ban them !!!!!! Get someone in these rooms and start closing accounts associated with these ID's and the vulgar and obscene ones also. I would like to finish with one last comment. I have communicated with Chet's Staff and setting aside her arrogance, no names mentioned, at least she answered. I wasn't happy about her response though Chet; just in case you are interested. At least I got a human response, unlike yahoo that totally ignores you. Yahoo take some advice from a user, get with chet or someone like him, and gain some control over these rooms and it would be a better place for everyone involved. I understand you were sued once for pornography related issues involving children, maybe you are trying for a second suit. How about it Yahoo, clean it up, it's sickening. We would also appreciate being able to talk to a human on occasion and apparantly so would Verizon Customer Service. Sincerely, W.K. Martin (Veni) written by J, March 26, 2007
I have a few other yahoo accounts that I can get into but cannot enter a chat room with...Upon informing yahoo my response was Yes we know....??? Do I take it from there that they dont give a ****? cuz it sure seems like they figure your just one more complaint we have many yahoo accounts yours is one we can afford to lose....

foul language and bashing and bots and booting....someone spoils it for many others. I protect myself against the bots and spam.....getting into the chat room is so annoying then when you get in you do not have sound......or some other message or it tells you many times you are already here, then you care logged out of chat after it takes you half an hour to get in the room. This is sooo annoying and ends up in discouragment.

Hi Chet! I'm glad you started this yahoo chat tidal wave...and this site! Yahoo has been going downhill for way too long. As bad as it is...why on earth would anyone even think about paying for the service if it came to that? What a joke! You're a smart man...have you thought of starting your own chat community? I know a lot of chatters are looking for a new place to chat! I started chatting 7 years ago and it used to be a great place to get together and meet people and have fun. Now most of the people I used to chat with no longer come to chat because of all the hassles with booters and room flooders and spam. Yahoo doesn't seem to care about any of the many complaints I've sent and I know it's the same way with the complaints they've recieved from hundreds of others. How can they sit there and keep coming up with "new ideas" when they can't even fix what they have? I am ready to close all my yahoo accounts and search for other options! One group we belong to...a big classic boat club group...has already changed some of it's system because of the problems with yahoo, including the mail system. Sometimes I receive mail that was sent a week before or longer! Sometimes I don't recieve the mail at all! And what do I get when I complain? The form letter telling me, more or less, that it's something I am doing wrong! Give me a break! Yahoo better wake up or someone will come up with a better idea and they will be left with nothing but bots!

The real yahoo chat rooms are the ones we had before all the spam started. All we had to do was click on a room, and we were there. The rooms use to be fun, and they can still be fun if yahoo would get those spam bots out of there. I would rather not have so much in Yahoo Messenger, than to have all this happening. Sometimes I can't get into the rooms. They are either full or I get "This conference does not exist" message... or I get other messages. So I get discouraged and I just stop trying to get into the rooms. Yahoo, why can't you just fix the rooms the way you had them years ago? They were great. I would not let my children or g-children go in the yahoo chat rooms and see all the smut being said by bots. If you are going to advertise that way, then why can't they have a bot room to themselves? If other people wanted to vist that room, then they can. I'm just fed up. Thank you for listening.

Chet I have a great respect for you but for you to complain now makes no sense to me. Booters and Spam is how you make your money. Ytunnel is a PAID for program to stop the problems everyone is complaining about. Now if Yahoo fixes all the issues we USERS complain about, why we will need tunnel. I think your program is great and I know you work hard to keep tunnel ahead of yahoo booters. But truth is those booters make programs to keep ahead of your tunnel as you fight to stop them. So now the booters flooded the rooms which puts the ball in your court. I fully agree this is an issue worth complaining about but I think using yahoo users to keep your money flowing IS WRONG. If some person solves this yahoo issue and charges 30 bucks to have the software guess where everyone will go.
written by charlene, March 27, 2007 i have stoped using yahoo chat for alot of reasons , to many bots ,can't find friends, don't know what room they are in so i stoped using if thinks get betteri will return to yahoo chat written by ladymo, March 27, 2007
i wish to comment too about not getting into rooms cuz of all the bots, spammers , booters, it use to be fun. but now its isnt worth bringing up my yahoo messenger. it would be nice if we could chat like we use too..

The Real yahoo is as follows..
Im just as fed up with chat and the crap that goes on. what people truely forgets is that YAHOO INC only used chat mainly to get there search engine a boost in the ratings. Chat although very usely is a free sevice and paid for by yahoo, so that don't care about the quality now that their search engine is so big. Now i'm a US Army Soldier not a Yahoo employee and as such I hate using it but none the less i'm left with out really any other choice. Its free and pretty dummy proof so its good for my family to use when i'm away. So I will say this. Yahoo Inc I know you don't care about us but please I will give my time freely to be an admin or give us a way to call admins to rooms when problems with booters or hackers or porn bots come about. As a soldier I need yahoo to get in easy touch and video with my family. Now I know that doesnt help or solve anything but just felt I needed to say that. written by steve Penny, March 28, 2007
i have attDSL/yahoo. i pay for this service and chat is one of my favorite features. the level of annoyance just to get in and stay in the chat rooms is beyond acceptability. And if i do manage to get in ( after several clicking attempts) i get signed out or have to tolerate a chat room FULL of porn bots. Ive seen yahoo do nothing but decline in the last year or so. There "NEW" tv guide on my home page is useless when it comes to providing any information that i can use This is unacceptable. i vote in DOLLARS. att/yahoo is not the only service available to me.

I'm tired of the way Yahoo plays both side of the fence, allowing spam, bots, and useless advertisements in all their chat rooms, reporting them to Yahoo is a joke, and its time they take this issue seriously, maybe if they get enough complaints Yahoo would implement steps to combat these unnecessary porn bot solicitation and advertisements and become reputable and provide a place were good constructive conversation can take place, without porn bots trying to enticed you to their sites!
written by Polar, March 29, 2007
I from time to time get to check out a few webcams and it always seems when the girls get on the cam and some panty-waste booter gets rejected the bots fly. I'm just shooting in the dark here but... if they go to boot people because they get to see chicks what are they thinking when they peek in the neighbors windows and see them having fun. I think the ones running programs are compensating for something they don't have in life...gf's/bf's, ownership of something other than their clothes, money... and the list goes on. Quite a few of the program runners talk of being in jail/ prison, do you thing they are just "Butt-Hurt". Pardon the punn!

Bots.. Porn bots.. Booters.. Yahoo stinks for allowing all of this to keep going on. They have let bots destroy Yahoo.

Yahoo! Messenger is all frigged up and Y!Tunnel is all frigged up because of it. Chet needs to make a client that will run like Y!Tunnel and messy together.
written by CW, April 06, 2007
First of all I would like to say thanks Chet for the ytunnel program, I use it religiously, I wouldn't venture into Yahoo chat without it!
From personal experience I have entered a chat room ( after numerous tries to access it) only to find that the entire room is full of bots, not one other real person in it other than me. Yahoo! doesn't seem to realize that by neglecting the needs and wants of the people who use their chat service, it will end up hitting their pocket books as well because let's face it who wants to do business with any company that could care less about its customers? written by polar, April 13, 2007 I wonder how Yahoo! is going to fix their problems, are they just gonna email marcus and ask him to stop selling his programs and say at least they tried. I hope google steps up with a chat room setup. Yahoo! will get flushed like bad dope. written by Kelly, April 26, 2007
This has gone way to far. Chet took a stand years ago when he desided to create Ytunnel. To me this has been & still is a great software program. It's well worth the small amount of money you pay for some piece of mind on yahoo. Ytunnel & Pro has come along ways thru the years trying to fight the boot & bot,(Spam & Porn) problem. I called yahoo a few years ago about this porn & spam problem and guess what my answer was. The person on the phone from yahoo told me that they were on paid servers (advertisers) and messenger & chat was free so there was nothing they could do about it. So in turn the paid servers which pay yahoo through advertising outway the free service.
The sad part is that some people desided to put Chet down cause he designed, wrote & created software which takes a lot of time in coding alone to try and keep up with yahoo messenger software. Of course yahoo can't fix all the problems that's why Chet will always have a good business But as Chet has said & a lot of us are fed up with that this has went way to far. The bots have almost completely took over chat. Ok lets say this, The bots(porn, spam, attack, voice laggers) take over right. Nobody REAL can get in chat, so now whats the point cause theres nobody real to advertise to or boot or anything to that matter. So in turn the big losers are yahoo itself cause nobody in chat is real. It's just all program's (bots) running, jumping from room to room advertising to what? themselves, lol... See Chet was smart enough to create Ytunnel and knew it was good for business. Most of these program writers cause havok just for the fun of it & to me that's what don't make sence. These are smart people in computer programming & code writing, but as many of them have told me when I asked them, the reason they cause havok is that their bored. lol give us a break... Instead of designing something that can do some good & making a business or making some money from it, you design something bad that cause's havok to others for free. Ok so that tells me that Chet & other's who do good is a lot smarter than all of you. You put Chet down for his program but yet on the side you try and steal his program & use it yourself to help protect yourself. To me that's just being jealous of Chet & his partners for creating a piece of software to really help people. I left yahoo chat a little over a year ago because of this growing problem and to spend time with family who was down on their health. I built 2 more computers in that same time frame and now i'm back to try and help Chet's cause. Chet is right, it's time to take a stand. written by friend_indeed75, May 03, 2007
You know, someone has to be giving those porn bots a credit card number....they wouldn'r come back unless they are making money somehow. Just help make sure EVERYONE in Yahoo!Chat knows NEVER to click on a site linked to a bot profile. Sure was nice to have the freedom to make a private user rooms too, one you could save to favorites and go back to at will. It gave everyone an alternative to the yahoo rooms when they filled up with crap.
written by Rick, May 06, 2007
Its has become to the point where its no longer even usable to go into a chat room . If it is yahoo's intention to charge for this service to eliminate the bots ( like MSN did) and then realized no one would pay and the usage dropped off to the point MSN shut down its chat rooms. Then Yahoo must somehow be getting compensated and allowing the SPAM bots in . Its automated responses , the lack of any form or way to human contact them to address this problem tells me that they have no intention of fixing this problem . Perhaps what is needed is to boycott any of its advertisers and let those advertisers know you will not purchase any of their products untill the issue is resolved .
written by Rick, May 19, 2007
It's gotton to the point either they fix it charge for chat and block out the bots ( which im sure Yahoo is thinking about) or just say screw it and let the bots talk to each other . Since Yahoo shut down those user rooms every nut job and bot has found its way into chat if the bots are not bad enough you have the third world coffee cafes where they come in and scream Hello into the mic and talk right over you . Im to the point of surrender , as no amount of bitching to them will fix it. If they wanted it fixed they would but Yahoo makes money from the Spam.
written by phil, June 06, 2007
Dont blame the bots they are out there to make money blame the idiots that get their credit cards out of their pockets,
written by linda reilly, June 16, 2007
Yahoo for a long time now is a proper pain in the butt,Why cant it be like it was years ago,you just clicked on a room and in you went, now you can click 50 times and never get near to the room for damn bots, or comments like no conference....or you are already in this room........ or just no explanation at all....im getting very frustrated with the whole damn thing..... yahoo needs to get its finger out of its ar** and get it fixed (excuse the *** word)..... You know some people are housebound or disabled and only have the computer for company for goodness sake have a thought for them, what yahoo needs is some good healthy competition, then it would be crying out for all its members to come back, someone like yourself chet should get a chat client up and running or even google, anyone but yahoo, but then if no one is complaining what can we expect it needs us all to stand up and be counted before the issue is near to being resolved
written by Merc, August 09, 2007
As I sift through these comments, I can't help but think that a lot of people aren't grasping the fact that many users create the very market for the bots. Those people that come in looking for love at first type, nude pics, their future ex wife, etc. are the ones that are taking out their credit cards and signing up to the websites or services offered by the bots. Like someone said in a previous post, someone must be making them money, otherwise they wouldn't be there. Sex sells... it always has, it always will. It's no different than prostitution or an adult store in some seedy area of town, someone keeps them in business.
Also, take into account the adult rooms on Yahoo... look at the category names... they are perfect for bots trying to target a particular niche which those same people would be receptive to. Yahoo doesn't make marketing deals with these bots like some people suggest but they do capitalize off of it. Even if a person looks at a bot's Yahoo profile, Yahoo has their own banners and sponsors that make them money. If they wanted to make their service bot proof they could easily do it but they would lose money and no company is in the business of losing money. The reason the user rooms were taken away was because of the number of pedophiles that targeted Yahoo and grouped together privately, sharing in child pornography. After Operation Candyman, Yahoo was forced to close the rooms or close their service. Despite there being the bot problem, I don't think that's causing the servers to slow down, trust me they have the bandwidth covered. The bots have been around for years and it's always been a ratio of more bots than actual live users. Yahoo has already went to India and distributed laptops to students and hired them to respond to the sheer number of e-mails that they constantly receive. More than likely they are outsourcing their servers and locations as well just like any other American corporation these days. My guess is once everything is relocated and up and running, things will go smoothly once more for the chat users... although I wouldn't hold my breath on the bots being gone. If anything, it will be survival of the fittest, the bots will become more sophisticated and will blend into chat more, even fooling the regs into taking a peek at their profiles. On a final note... think about it from this perspective. When Yahoo has their quarterly shareholder meetings and they show all the new accounts that had been created it makes the company appear to be highly successful and popular. AOL did the same thing for years, until it was found that they were including accounts that had been made by hackers and spammers, which if nobody has caught on yet, are one in the same. Yahoo will eventually become the way of the dinosaur. Another chat service will come about that will limit bot activity. The only way to do that is to privatize the service, have some sort of real time banning of abusers and have other stipulations in order to become an active member. A chat service like that will truly house a community and people will be able to network and build positive relationships with one another. There actually is a website out there like that (ASW) but like the above suggestion, you have to be invited. written by fox, December 03, 2007
My comment is this...I understand why yahoo closed the user rooms down for. But if there gonna do that , then they should remove all the sex bot from being in the rooms as well. Any kid can lie about there ages and get into any room which is filled with sex bots that post links to adult sites which they can click on at any time, sure they may not get to see all the goodies from that site, but can still see a few images that they shouldn't see...come on yahoo clean it up.

You know, maybe if people stopped using Yahoo chat they would actually think about fixing it. Personally I've been chatting at Oohya chat instead for the last few weeks, unlike yahoo they have no bots at all. I have to admit, it's a little bit freaky being able to actually CHAT in a chat room lol.
